cairo

Crowded, polluted and dangerous. We cannot deny that this is what immediately comes to mind when we think of Cairo. But there’s still something that we can’t ignore; Cairo is somehow beautiful and mysterious. Below are 6 things only Cairenes will understand:

1. Cairo Contradicts Itself

Cairo University is in Giza governorate, Ahly Club is in Zamalek, Zamalek Club is in Meet 3o2ba and 6th October bridge crosses most of the city except 6th October district. New Cairo is part of Helwan governorate, not Cairo.

These contradictions make everyone goes like…eh eli gab el2al3a ganb el ba7r.

2. Anyone Could Be a Sayes

If you were walking down the street and needed some extra change in your pocket, simply spot any car trying to park or getting out of a parking space and play the role of a sayes. No worries, experience isn’t required. Just shout “Ta3alaa, ta3alaa’ while waving a hand, and that’s how you become a Cairene sayes aseel.

3. Za7ma Ya Donia Za7ma

There was a reason Adaweya sang this song. If you live in Cairo, you will know that “Me7war” should be avoided on every occasion, because in fact it is nothing but a big parking lot where cars can spend the night.

The traffic on 6th October” bridge is always slow in the Heliopolis direction until you reach the Tahrir Square exit then it starts going smooth.

“Saleh Salem” wala howa salah wala howa salem! Da damar shamel.

4. Quotes & 7ekam on Cars

Usually, people love to use their favorite quote as a tattoo, a picture hanged on the wall, but on their cars? That’s only in Cairo.

5. Shops

If you open any type of shop, like an Internet café or a waffle house, others will copy your idea if it appeals to them. This is how the whole world works, but only in Cairo, they will open their shops right next door to yours!

6. Ambulance

Only in Cairo, you will find that one car which tries to avoid traffic by following the ambulance.
