Makeup don'ts
If you’re starting up with makeup, there are many things you might be doing that you don’t know aren’t the best idea. Your application techniques or choice of products makes or breaks your makeup look. It’s super important to be mindful of those absolute makeup don’ts, and what you should do instead.ย

1- Filling brows with black pencilย

Even if your hair is black, never ever use a brow pencil that’s black. Even brow pencils the same colour as your hair aren’t the best; a shade lighter is better. Sharpie brows are not cute.

2- Sweeping motions with a beauty blenderย

Beauty blenders, or any other similarly shaped makeup sponges, should never ever be used in sweeping motions. The whole point is for them to create an airbrushed look, even if you have a full face of foundation and concealer. You pat the foundation/concealer into your skin, not sweep or brush it across your face, because it’ll make your makeup look streaky. It’s one of the most important makeup don’ts.

3- Matching foundation to your faceย

When you go to makeup stores, some of the makeup artists there don’t know what they’re doing and will try to match your foundation shade with your arms or cheeks. The best way to find the right shade for you is to match it with your neck, especially when you tan a lot.ย 2E8EF1DE00000578-3323840-Trying_to_look_glam_The_Irish_beauty_s_skin_had_a_yellow_tinge_w-m-36_1447862199807

4- Using concealer thatโ€™s 385638 shades lighter

Look, highlighting is one thing, and concealing is another. If you’re using a concealer that’s too light for you to cover up your dark circles, it simply won’t work. To conceal, use a concealer as close to your skin tone as possible, nothing more than one shade lighter. Not even Eva Longoria can pull it off.

5- Using colour correcting

Orange, green and purple correctors are everywhere, and are great when they’re needed, but colour correcting is only effective when the “problem areas” are that problematic. If you don’t have hyper pigmentation or extreme redness, step away from the corrector. you’ll just look weird and have more product on your phone than you need.

6- Over-baking

Ben Nye Banana Powder is great, and baking sure does accentuate your contour skills, but over-baking makes your face look ashy and cakey. Baking might look great in photos, but anyone who sees you will think you’re dehydrated and drier than the Sahara.

7- Matte lips?

Matte lipstick is amazing. So what’s the problem? Applying matte lipstick to chapped, dry, beat up lips looks nasty and no one should ever do it. If you want to wear matte, prep your lips. You need to exfoliate your lips and moisturize well before applying a matte lipstick – it’s already drying and already makes your cracks more prominent, so wear it with caution.

If you do any of these, it’s completely fine. With makeup, it’s always a trial and error. You might do something for years, and realise much later on that it’s not the greatest technique to use. Let us know what makeup don’ts you used to do.ย
