job

Choosing the ‘right’ job, particularly here in Egypt, is one of the most difficult life challenges. Since we don’t have a strong support system to help us choose our paths after graduating from university, we tend to try out many jobs before finally pinpointing what we really want in life.

When we land a job, we have to make sure that it’s aligned with our direction in life. We have to be able to identify if that is the path we really wish to take, and know exactly when to leave and move on if the job is not fulfilling our dreams. Although it may seem like a simple decision but sometimes financial instability and a dormant labor market make us hesitant. Here are 7 signs that you should leave your current job right PRONTO:

1-     You Lack Passion

Waking up early every day is equally challenging for most of us; no one expects you to wake up feeling bubbly and cheerful or to jump and sing ‘Everything is awesome’ every morning, but you should at least have something to look forward to in your day. If you wake up every day with the same negative thoughts and don’t plan to change that, you need to rethink your job.

2-     Learning Curve

Work should, by default, teach you something new every day; either a new experience or a technical skill. If you feel that you pick up where you left off every day, that there is no more room for self-development or career advancement, by all means move on to another job.

3-     Boredom and Productivity

Applying your skills, education and knowledge to work should excite you and motivate you to perform better on the job. If you feel that this spark is no longer there, that you’re bored and lost interest in what you are doing, that it’s been too long since you felt productive, then you know what to do.

4-     The Puzzle

The working process should make you feel that you are getting closer to achieving your target; every day should feel like an extra piece of the puzzle that would finally make up your goal. If you feel that you are going into an infinite loop, and that this path is driving you to a place that is not where you want to be eventually,  you should definitely put yourself back on the right track again.

5-     The Job Is Changing You

If you notice that work is changing you to a worse image of yourself, either physically or psychologically; if you don’t have time for yourself anymore that you lost your spark; if you’re gaining or losing weight in an exaggerated way and it’s affecting your health; if you feel like work is making you more nervous and angry, for God’s sake leave this place.

6-     The Outcast

One the most crucial things in a workplace is feeling that you belong; the fact that your coworkers are somewhat like you or share a vision that is close to yours boosts your productivity. If you don’t find that where you work, if you feel like an outcast, that there is a huge cultural or ethical gap between you and your company, believe me when I say you will not be of any use there.

7-     Your Boss Needs an Exorcism

Let’s be honest; bosses are not usually lovable at most jobs, and here in Egypt it’s a whole new level. Many bosses are not hired based on their managerial experience or skills, but rather on their seniority in the company. It’s common to find managers who don’t have the faintest clue about running a company. That’s why if you feel that your boss is driving you to the edge of suicide, if you think about your boss more than your job (and not in a romantic way of course), if he always makes you feel that you’re not good enough and that if you leave the company will find a replacement in the blink of an eye, you, my friend, need to let him go.
