With social media dominating our lives, students have tried to use these platforms in the most useful ways. Accordingly, a group of students at the American University in Cairo (AUC) created a Facebook group named ‘Rate AUC Professors’ where students help each other choose their courses by rating their professors. With over ten thousand AUCian members, lately, some members have been using the group differently.

I was actually inspired by a post on the group that triggered this article, all credit to the member who posted it.

The Treasure Finder:

From finding a blue zebra pen to a Porsche key chain, he found it and he will keep it until a certain timing (mostly 3:30 pm) before he hands it over to the Lost and Found. However, if a boy found a girl’s belonging, he would keep it until she contacts him. Maybe she’s pretty; wala eh?

The “it will only take two minutes”:

The ones who have to conduct a survey and must get responses back. Where is the right place to post this survey instead of asking ten of his or her friends? Rate AUC Professors!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tens of comments fly in with “done” when at the end of day, you only end up with two responses.

The “eh il rakna il ghabiya di”:

The one who walks around the parking lot with a mission to catch the bad drivers. Instead of reporting it to security, he posts the picture on the group and creates a heated debate as if it’s the solution! (Howa bokra hayirkin nafs il rakna di). Some people even park in a ridiculous way just to be posted and get some attention and fame.

The “where can I find dog food in sokhna”

I’m sorry, what? What do you want from your life? Why are you even alive?

The Troller:

The one who sees or creates a meme, most probably related to university or AUC in specific, and decides to share it with ten thousand people. It’s funny and we do need a break from all the rating once in a while. These people put in so much effort to make us laugh, that if this same effort was exerted in studying they would be record breakers!

The “event is from 7-9.”

A member at some club is responsible for sharing their events. It can be a trip, a commencement ticket for sale, a mashrou3 leila concert ticket for sale, a job vacancy or just a recruitment post.

The “you left your passenger window open”

If you forgot your double flasher, your windows open or anything that’s wrong with your car, they spot it and warn you! These people deserve a free pizza everyday for life. They always remind us that good people are not yet extinct. If I could write a book just to thank you guys, the book would be as long as the amount of papers I have written in my university life all together. Remember this: not all heroes wore capes; some of them dress just like you.

It’s only registration week where people actually remember the original purpose of the group; professors/courses names are the only posts you see.
