Just when we thought the “virginity tests” were going to be the end of it, Elhamy Agina, Egypt’s MP, strikes again with yet another engrossing idea!
Elhamy Agina is now calling to impose harsher punishments for women who commit adultery. His reason for doing so, you ask? To preserve women’s virtue, of course. It’s not sexist, no. It’s all for the sake of women. ِ

His remark came about as a reply to Maria Azer, a fellow parliamentarian, when she proposed to make the punishment for women and men adulterers the same. Not only did he stop there, he also asserted that men are not the reason behind adultery and that it’s always the woman’s fault (that sounds about right!!!). He ended up calling for a bill that increases the severity of the punishment of women who cheat on their husbands.

Let’s recap all the ridiculous notions he’s suggested recently:

1-He started by hailing for Female Genital Mutilation and encouraged women to undergo the procedure in order to reduce their sexual desires so that it can be equal to that of Egypt’s sexually weak men.

2-He called on the Ministry of Higher Education to enforce virginity tests on new undergraduate (women) university students because, in his humble opinion, it’s the solution for decreasing the percentage of ‘urfi’ marriages in Egypt. He urged people not to be offended by this proposal and claimed that if mothers/fathers were irritated by the idea, it means that they’re scared their daughter is/was in an ‘urfi’ marriage. (yes, sure, anybody who doesn’t feel like giving up their right to privacy has something to hide!)

3-When the migrant boat drowned off Egypt’s shore and 170 refugees died, he claimed that they deserved to die and they deserve no sympathy because they were in pursuit of an unguaranteed fantasy.

And now this. What’s next?!
