There is no shortage of restaurants, cafes, hotels, bars and nightclubs in Egypt. But these places are getting ridiculously expensive. Food trucks are the new way to go! Sometimes, you just need to chill with your friends and still have some money left in your wallet when you get back home. Cruising around in the car is always a nice break, because you can’t expect to go all out everyday and not be broke. However, a night of cruising around and listening to music with your friends cannot be complete without something to nibble on! So if you live in Heliopolis and want to grab a quick bite to eat, try out these game changing food trucks in your area.

1- Vend

It’s considered a hot trend now to ditch traditional restaurants and go for a gourmet food truck. But it’s hot for a reason. Vend is a food truck that has successfully operated in Sahel for the past 3 months, and now luckily for us, they’re up and running on Horreya Street, Almaza! The truck pays homage to classics with sandwiches that include burger, smoked turkey, roast beef along with their speciality, the Meat MishMash! I would recommend ordering their juicy and tender chicken breast sandwich because it is lip-smacking!

And guess what? They also cater! So go ahead people; go give them a try! I promise you; they’re worth it.

2- Grab One

Grab One Food Truck

It may have taken 22 years to get to my mouth, but I’ve found a divine hot dog sandwich in Heliopolis and it was worth the wait! Grab One has only been open for business for 8 months, but it rose quickly through the ranks. The truck offers you a variety of sauces, so don’t pass up on trying them all out. I recommend getting their offer of 3 hot dog sandwiches, Coke and dessert for 35 LE. It’s cheap and tasty; you’ll find no surprises there – just happy bellies. Call it serendipity, but Grab One is located right next to Vend on Horreya Street, Almaza!

3- byBike
ByBike Food Truck

byBike started as a project by a couple who were trying to save up money for their wedding. The three wheels cart that resembles “Arabeet el Robabekya” has grown fairly popular since. Now, their mission has become spreading the concept throughout Egypt and encouraging Egyptian youth to start more projects like this. It’s painted yellow, richly decorated and sells heavenly sweets and sandwiches varying from cupcakes to hot dogs with a side dish of an entertainment show. They also sell seasonal treats like “Konafa bel Manga”, a dessert that Ramadan can’t be Ramadan without anymore, and “Batata bel Konafa w el Caramel”. They move around a lot, and with Cairo being a sprawling city, you might never run into this truck. The best way to track it down is to check their Facebook page where they constantly update their location.

4- Vagabond

VagaBond Food TrucksExhausted from a long day’s work, my friends picked me up on my birthday. We found Vagabond parked on our way to start the festivities. The truck just looked so cool that I knew I wanted to try it. Upon scanning the menu, I quickly realised that their mission is to bring legitimate food to the street by offering affordable and incredibly tasty takes on nachos, hot dogs, wraps, fries and chicken sandwiches. They have a diverse and long menu which is unlikely for a street food project. So, variety is not lacking! I would recommend their gigantic delicious hot dog with all the fixin’s and their cheese fries!

Vagabond The Food Truck

The best thing about these food trucks, aside from the food obviously, is that they are all run by Egypt’s youth. Unemployment is no joke, and it’s only getting more serious. The fact that these trucks are operating and making ends meet only means that there is still hope! It’s up to us now to support the youth’s creative initiatives.
