Fashion Policing

So, since we’ve all been on this good earth for quite some time, we’ve all been readily exposed to the concept of ‘fashion police‘. You know, the ones who judge your outfits for not fitting you quite well and all.

And you know what? What we’re discussing here isn’t even remotely close to this. It’s not fashion police rather than fashion (and economic) policing. Need some context? Well…

Yeah. So, basically, this happened. One person, unprovoked by anything really, decided to take to their Twitter account to point out how shopping when the seasonal collections are out is better.

And that would have been perfectly fine had this person not added that anyone who shops during sales basically “has no self-respect”. Totally unwarranted, right?

Well, don’t worry about the general reaction all too much because if we know anything about Egyptian twitter, we know that it takes matters into its own hands from the get-go.

But as we’ve read these replies we’ve noticed the very thing that we need to discuss. The very classism of the original ‘callout’ tweet. And, yes, it’s something we need to discuss.

See, here’s the thing. Some people like to shop in-season and that’s completely perfect. We wouldn’t shame them when we see them and we wouldn’t tell them to save their money for other times.

Wholly because if that’s what they enjoy and if they have the means to do it, then why rain on their parade?

And by that logic, why rain on anyone else’s parade? Why tell people that shopping during sales season is bad and that the clothes are ‘bad’?

And why call anyone who shops during the sales a ‘peasant’ like that’s meant to be an insult, and a derogatory one at that, for simply doing something they want to do?

It’s just uncalled for, it really is. And there’s no lesson you can display here exactly because this is just called being respectful. If it’s not for you, don’t do it.

the amended tweet from the original poster, which only goes to show the first, classist tweet didn’t have to see the light of day.

And don’t just try to be on-brand for Standard Twitter Meanness for clout because, guess what, sometimes you end up being classist. If you have a valid point, it can still be valid without it being derogatory.

Fashion Police…but make it classist.
