Telling your family you love them is important, but showing it through your actions is what really matters. Read on to get ideas on how you can do that.

Do chores: Wash the dishes instead of your mother having to. Clean up after yourself. Make tea/coffee in the morning. Do whatever you can that other family members would need to do otherwise.

Bring goodies on your way home: Don’t you love it when a family member comes home with a little surprise for you? Whether you were shopping or just walking past a store, get a little something a family member (or all of them) would like. It could be your sister’s favourite chocolate or your father’s favourite magazine. It’ll let them know you were thinking of them and wanted to pamper them.

Make breakfast in bed or a nice dinner with a properly set table: Nothing says “I love you” like taking the time to make food. At least, that’s how I see it. Gather the family for breakfast, lunch or dinner and enjoy some quality time together over a meal you took the time to whip up. It doesn’t have to be complicated at all. It could be bread you’ve heated up and a few slices of cheese. It would still mean a lot.

Get a thoughtful gift: A family member’s birthday is coming up? Get them that thing they’ve been talking about for months or have wanted for a while. Buy them something that has meaning to them.

Make time for them: Quality time is one of the major aspects of demonstrating your love. Spend time with them. It will mean a lot, especially if you’re busy. Nothing says “I love you” like “I’m up to my nose with work, but I’m choosing to make time for you, regardless.”

Talk to them; tell them about your life: Sharing details about your life with them will show how you want to involve them in your life instead of keeping them out of it. We share information about our lives with people we care about, so this would be a great way to show them you love them.

Introduce them to your closest friends: It would show them how much you want to share the important friendships in your life with them and how comfortable you are with them meeting your friends.

Check in: If you’re traveling or are going to be out all day, call them midday to see how they’re doing and give them a quick update. It’s always nice when you let your family members know they’re on your mind even though you’re not at home.

HUGS! Sometimes a warm, genuine hug is all you need to let someone know you love them.

Always wave the white flag: Be slow to anger and quick to please. Tell them the things you like about them. Accept them as they are. Appreciate the things they do for you. “Koon ma7dar kheir.” Be the person your home would be empty without; empty of love, of peace, of joy. Be the white flag.
