There’s never enough cinematic art out there in the world. And we most definitely need more of it here in Egypt. Art houses are usually institutesย that screen experimental or independent films instead of the usual commercially entertaining films most major theatres screen. So in case you’re wondering where all of these art gems are in Egypt, here are some of them:ย
Location:ย Cinema Odeon,ย 4 Abdel Hamid Said Street,ย off Talaat Harb Street, Downtown, Cairo
Zawya is Egypt’s first art house, fully dedicated to cinema! It’s got several screenings throughout the day, usually of the same film, and they change it every few weeks.
Cinematheque offers a few screenings every now and then. They also offer workshops and lectures aboutย famous directors. For instance, they’ll be doing a special screening of “Mawaed Asha'” on the 21st of October.

“The French Institute of Egypt invitesย you throughout the year to discover French films. From contemporary ones to old classics”. The screenings usually take placeย on Sundays. However, they sometimesย screen films on other days as well.
Room Art Space has a “Coffee and Film” night every Sunday at 8pm! Otherwise, it offers a variety of events throughout the week, displaying all sorts of art!
They host public and private screenings, along with other live performances and workshops.ย Their screeningsย usually occur once a week and their setting has a nice warm Oriental charm.
“Cinema El Fourn is an outdoor cinema showcasing independent films of variety of genres from Egypt and around the world.” They’ve got their own film calendar. Do check it out!
