If your daily routine puts you in the midst of Egypt’s bustling streets, you know that there are some struggles to be faced. They’re so simple, yet don’t seem to be going anywhere.

After much frustration, here are 8 things I want to tell people in Egypt’s streets:

1-It’s not okay to stare at strangers:

While walking in the street in Egypt, you’ll feel like a model walking the runway. Most of the passer-bys look at you for no apparent reason, to the extent that you may think there’s something wrong with you and start checking your appearance. Maybe over- curiosity? Whatever the reason, It’s so awkward and nobody feels comfortable with it.

2-Don’t blast “mahraganat”:

Many Egyptians these days love listening to “mahraganat.” But guess what? Others find it music abuse! It makes walking in the street feel like being a part of one of Sobki’s movies. Especially when a certain song goes viral and you just find everywhere.

3-Smiling isn’t flirting:

Don’t you ever just remember something funny and start smiling? Well, maybe one of the previously mentioned people who was staring at you will think that you like them. I guess they need to fix their expectations.

4-The pavement is not for motorcycles:

Don’t scare the hell out of me and drive with your motorcycle on the pavement while I’m walking on it. It doesn’t matter how bad the traffic jam is; it’s a street not a circus.

5-Try to lower your voice in public transportation:

After a long day in Cairo, people are probably exhausted, not to mention hot if it’s summer. So actually they just need to relax until they arrive home. Also, they won’t be excited to hear “the steps of cooking  bamia” or someone’s political analysis for “Masr ray7a fein.”

6-Saying “I don’t know” is not a shame:

We all suffer from asking people how to get somewhere and being absolutely incorrect directions. It starts with “howa allak fein?” and ends with getting lost. I appreciate your kindness but if you don’t know where it is, please save my time and yours as well.

7-Accidents/Fights aren’t fun:

Egyptian roads are crowded enough. But when an accident happens, many people stop by and start watching without actually offering help… Like it’s another action movie and they’re about to grab popcorn. If you can’t help, JUST KEEP MOVING!

8-Believe it or not Mr. Taxi Driver, I can see you:

Taxi drivers have a constant fear of not being seen by potential clients. So they start flashing their lights to get your attention. Dear Mr. Taxi Driver, don’t worry I can see you, and if I need a taxi I won’t be shy.

The main point is that the more consideration we have for those around us, the happier we all will be.
