The W Podcast by Dina G. hosted by Dina Ghabour was officially renewed for another season, and it kicked off with a powerful start. Amina Khalil joined as the first guest, opening up about a topic that rarely gets discussed: celebrities and public speaking, the real cost of being a public figure and how it shapes your freedom to speak.
During the conversation, Amina spoke candidly about how deeply she relates to the idea that being a public figure comes with heavy restrictions over your personal opinions and actions that simply wouldn’t exist if you were just another person. Being “Amina Khalil” is very different from being simply Amina. Suddenly, you’re expected to reflect what the public wants, thinks, and believes, instead of being given the space to express your own thoughts, choices, or direction in life.
The weight of fame is understandable. But the real challenge lies in how little room there is for individual or different opinions. The moment an actor speaks freely, the public reaction can turn into a collective attack. It’s as if being in the spotlight automatically comes with a rulebook you never agreed to. You’re expected to act exactly the way people want you to.
This ties directly into the unpredictable swing between love and hate that actors face every time they join a public conversation. One moment they’re endlessly praised; the next, they’re thrashed. There’s rarely a middle ground. Of course, that doesn’t mean fans or public attention are always negative. But the switch is real and it’s only getting more intense.
There’s a fine line between perceiving an actor as an icon or a role model and trapping them in the “public figure” chain, a label that often brings more pressure and frustration than meaning. Maybe it’s time we rethink what we expect from the people we admire. Actors aren’t vessels for our beliefs; they’re humans trying to navigate life like everyone else.
Perhaps giving them that space is the real sign of appreciation. Do you agree?
