Bezr El-Ketan

Curly hair, as we all know, is difficult to deal with. Well, not really difficult but rather different from straight hair. Basically, you and your hair are frenemies.

When you want it to look tight and curly and, well, good, it might spiral out of control. Bed head hair can be terrifying to deal with and if you have an event, you have to take your hair’s approval three days in advance.

So, in a nutshell, it’s a lot to deal with. Or it used to be, at least. See, recently, Egyptians seem to have discovered flaxseed hair gel (aka bezr el-ketan) and it’s been a much-awaited miracle…that many people seem confused about.

Don’t worry. If you’ve ever wanted to know a thing about Bezr El-Ketan, you’re in the right spot.

A little background

Bezr El-Ketan (aka flaxseed) is simply a seed…a seed that’s so versatile, it’s actually a challenge trying to find something you can’t use it in. It can be used in baking or to make smoothies because it’s a great source of protein, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids, which all help to balance the body’s hormones.

But, of course, Bezr El-Ketan’s most usual use is found in skincare products and (most importantly) gels.

Pros

The pros to the greatest gift all curly hair groups knew are many and almost endless. One of the many good things about flaxseed gel is that it can help your hair grow. It’s also great to keep your scalp perfectly healthy and it’s been hinted to reverse gray hair — you know, nothing short of miraculous.

This is, of course, without mentioning its great impact in combating dryness and frizz, two of your curls’ greatest enemies, through strengthening the hair’s elasticity by binding moisture to it.

And guess what? Bezr El-Ketan has also been said to combat hair loss.

Cons

Sadly, though, like every good thing on earth, you can’t have everything. Flaxseed oil has its cons too, though they are (thankfully) considerably less than the pros.

The greatest problem bezr el-ketan will give you is that it might leave a certain kind of residue on your hair, which will make it look AND feel crunchy and sticky like all those bad hair gel memes from 2007.

So that’s an unfortunate problem. Another one? Well, it’s not a problem per se, but flaxseed oil might end up not doing anything at all. Yeah, you read this right – sometimes, bezr el-ketan literally won’t work with your hair at all just because!

Another con to the whole bezr el-ketan process is, well, the process itself. See, the flaxseeds tend to be hard to separate. Not to mention, you also can’t store the gel for longer than two weeks.

How to actually make the gel

Okay, get ready for the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Here’s is how you can make your bezr el-ketan gel right at home:

First, essentially, you have to get bezr el-ketan from any nearby spice store. And once you’re home, you’ll pour two cups of water in the pot, which you’ll then leave to boil.

After that, you’ll put in two tablespoons of flaxseeds and leave it to boil, all while stirring it until it thickens. Then, you’ll take this concoction and filter it before it cools so the process will be easier. After it cools, you’ll simply use it over your hair like regular hair gel.

And there you have it! Simple, easy to use flaxseed hair gel (bezr el-ketan). P.S: when using it, your hair can’t ever be totally dry.

The myth, the legend, the DIY gel!
