I think I speak for everyone when I say that TV series are a lot of people’s safe haven. We spend a lot of time watching them, learning from them and hoping for a life that comes close to those of the characters we see on screen. It’s funny really because growing up, series were the only way we could get to know more about real life. We sort of expected our lives to go in the same manner like the TV shows we watched.

The Friendships

Admit it. We grew up watching some really great TV series about friendships, like for example Friends or How I Met Your Mother, and we couldn’t wait until we made a group of friends that was just as cool and supportive. The truth, however, was far from that. We grew up to find out that even if we were lucky enough to have loving friends, they will most definitely never have as much free time as they made them out to be on TV shows. Remember when the whole gang was there for Ross when his ex wife was giving birth to their son? They went to the hospital very late and stayed up to what seemed like a whole night. Well, the truth is far from that. Your friends will most probably visit the next day when your child is born, that is IF they actually do. You will not see them every day, and they will not know every little detail about your life. Everyday won’t be ‘let’s go grab coffee at our favorite café’ day. It’s sad, but it’s also true.

Relationships

TV shows have a way of convincing us that our first love story will survive all odds, or that it didn’t work out with a certain person because you were always meant for someone better. Ted met Robbin on the first episode of HIMYM, and nothing could stop their love from there. They ended up together 9 seasons after, despite all odds and with the lack of most of the fans approval. Rachel left her husband at their wedding and went on a dating spree with every guy you could ever think of, yet ended up with Ross anyway. Real life never worked that way though. People didn’t just find their soul mates and stuck to them despite all odds. Misunderstandings happened and real life got in the way.

High School

Let’s take One Tree Hill as an example. I mean seriously what kind of high school was that? Because the high school I went to was far from it. Haley could take months off to go on a music tour and come back and find no difficulty in keeping up with school work. Meanwhile, in real life, students have been burying their faces in the sand and praying to God day and night that they don’t fail. As for the parties, let’s just say that we are scarred for life. All we got was the prom and it sucked! Where were the bonfire parties like those at One Tree Hill?!

Careers

Thanks to TV series, we always thought we’d excel and helplessly fall in love with our jobs. I personally know a few people who fell victims for Grey’s Anatomy. Yes, you got that right. They went to medicine school and realized how stupidly deluded they were. All they got was years of torture in university and absolutely no success in finding a job. We won’t even talk to you about their social lives, because there was most definitely no Meredith to their Cristina.

Let’s face it though, they are the best expectations and we’re still waiting on most of them to come true. Finish reading this article, go binge watch your favorite show and sit tightly. Anytime now, you will make the best group of friends or excel so bad in your job.
