Social media has allowed people to share their whereabouts, pictures and videos and speak their minds out in front of literally everyone they know. This has proven to be problematic for some people, but is it a problem of oversharing or we as a society have become judgmental?

1. Ghada Abdel Razeq’s Video Scandal

A live video of Ghada Abdel Razeq that revealed a sensitive part of her body turned social media upside down. After it went viral, social media users started either insulting or harassing her; others went even as far as blaming her for getting paid to divert the attention away from recent political events. Others took a supportive stance since this is her own social media platform and she is free to do whatever the hell she wants to do without getting criticised. A few days later, Abdel Razeq released a video where she was genuinely apologizing, saying everyone sins and she is no exception. She explained that she was under the effect of medication and did not pay attention to what she had revealed.

2. Nelly Kareem’s Bikini Photo

Nelly Kareem shared a photo of herself wearing a bikini a few days ago, only to receive raging feedback and comments from the public. There was no rationality behind the comments, and people immediately started blaming her for sharing inappropriate content and calling her names. After the verbal attack she faced, she deleted the photo from Facebook and made her account private. She also left the public a comment saying that what she understood from the negative comments was that everyone who wears a swimming suit and goes to the beach will eventually go to hell!

3. Kylie Jenner’s Stalker

In 2014, Kylie Jenner was not cautious with sharing her whereabouts on Snapchat which resulted in her getting stalked by a man who tried to break into her Calabasas house. Luckily, he got arrested and sent to a psychiatric center after claiming that he is Jenner’s soulmate. This is not the first time that this has happened to the Kardashian-Jenner family. Kris Jenner was also stalked by a man who called her 300 times a day. But don’t worry, this the price that celebrities pay for being famous that we don’t need to fret about!

4. Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber faced a controversial moment after posting a photo in the wrong shrine. Apparently, the Yasukuni Shrine honored Japanese soldiers for killing many Chinese people during World War 2. After realizing his mistake, Bieber removed the photo and explained to his fans that while he was in Japan, he took a photo in front of what he thought was a beautiful shrine. He did not mean any harm. “To anyone I have offended, I am extremely sorry. I love you China and I love you Japan” He said.

While most of us are not celebrities, ordinary people can face similar situations too. The issue of cyber-bullying and oversharing is not restricted to our culture but is rather an international one. We are definitely more judgmental in this part of the world, but we can still see this happening in the West too. The learned lesson here is not to overshare our lives on social media and to keep some our private lives, well, private. Also, cyber-bullying should be taken more seriously.
