Proverbs: the advice given to us by some anonymous ancient people who probably have zero life experience. These so-called “motivational” pieces of advice might, in fact, ruin your life and they often promote the wrong ideology and mentality. We decided to put up a list of the infamous quotes along with a reality check under them.

Good things come to those who wait

No, they don’t! You’ll never get anything by waiting. You work your butt off! Yes, some could get lucky, of course, but this doesn’t have anything to do with waiting. While we understand it refers to actually working or being patient, the goals are only achieved because you worked. When you were “waiting,” you worked more, achieved your goals by the extra work, not the process of waiting.

If you love something let it go…

Sorry Elsa, letting go isn’t the answer. If you want something keep it, because common sense. If you’re losing this something, fight for it. Being passive and leaving “fate” to decide for you is utterly stupid, and you probably don’t even deserve this thing you’re letting go.

Better late than never

This might make sense in some situations, but in most cases, it’s better to just ignore the situations than going back to make them worse. If you didn’t do something, chances are people will forget that you didn’t. If you’re doing it “late” you’re basically reminding them, and in most cases it won’t be accepted.

There’s no place like home

Yes there is. A 10k hotel room in a 7 stars hotel with a comfy bed is definitely better than home…

Put yourself in other’s shoes

Yeah, you should try to understand where people are coming from, but isn’t that just giving them more room for excuses when they might not need it?

A relationship is like a watermelon

That’s a slang Egyptian proverb, meaning that a relationship could seem huge and pretty from the outside, but when you get in it it’s “2ar3a.” Everyone knows that you never buy a watermelon based on looks, and you have to “spank” it before you buy it.

We understand this paragraph might sound perverted, but that’s not our intentions.

The early bird catches the worm

It might, but only if there isn’t another sneaky bird stealing its worm later when it’s not looking!

Keep your friends close, and enemies closer

Your enemy is an enemy for a reason. Keeping them close will only boil your blood, and no one will benefit out of it. Also, chances are that you’re their enemy too, and that way they’re playing you as well. It’s just a waste of time, and the ones doing that are only the ones who secretly love their enemies. And speaking of loving your enemy…

Hitting a lover is like eating raisin

Another Egyptian proverb that we all grew up hearing it. If you’re “hitting” a loved one, then you’re probably a douche and don’t deserve then, and it’s never an excuse. Get your sh*t together!! Now if you actually like raisins, then you’re just weird…

Beggars can’t be choosers

Ironically, beggars are the only ones who actually afford choosing. They have nothing to lose, and waited long enough to not settle for anything but what they actually want.
