Studies have shown that an increase in stress can actually result in an increased likelihood of suffering a heart attack. It’s also been said that while stress itself might not affect your health, dwelling on it can. Furthermore, an increased state of stress is associated with a higher risk of diabetes in men.

Stress can also affect people based on their age. Millennial’s, people between the ages of 18 and 33, suffer a higher level of stress.

Finding the time to de-stress will not only lift an undoubtedly heavy weight off your shoulders, it can also potentially save you from suffering a multitude health issues.

We’ve compiled a list of our favourite, tried and tested, ways to de-stress.

1. SMILE
Studies have shown that a simple smile can infinitely alter your mood point, especially during a stressful time.

2. DE CLUTTER
Having an organized life can work wonders. Organize your thoughts, de-clutter your office, tidy up your room. Having peaceful looking surroundings will have an effect. Not to mention that taking the time to organize, quietly, will most probably sooth your overworked mind.

3. ME TIME
Make an effort to take some time off and focus on yourself. Finding the time to disconnect and clear your mind will make a huge difference. Try doing something that ultimately soothes your nerves, like painting or listening to classical music. Take a solo trip, or go bird watching, it doesn’t matter as long as you take a break from stressful thoughts to be able to focus on healing yourself.

4. GET PHYSICAL
Having a stressful day at the office? Find time for a quick exercise. A quick stretch can, relieve muscle tension, and will in turn lower the amounts of stress you’re suffering.

5. FURRY FRIENDS
Studies have shown that taking the time to snuggle with a pet can significantly lower stress levels. It can also sooth-overworked minds.
6. GO OUT
Gather your closest friends and plan a night out. Being in the company of friends will work wonders, especially when it’s during a fun night out. Dress up, and spend some time with people who are guaranteed to make for some good times.

7. PAMPER TIME
Find some time to schedule a nice, long massage or a sensual bubble bath. By putting yourself in situations where you’re surrounded by calming sounds, therapeutic aromas and soft environments, you’re ultimately giving your body a long, well deserved treat.

8. BLOCK-OUT BAD NEWS
When you find yourself stressed, make an effort to censor yourself from bad news. Don’t watch the news channel, and put down the newspaper. Tune into a sitcom, or pick up a light read in order to have the opportunity to de-stress.

9. SPEND TIME IN NATURE
Take the time to plan a leisurely stroll in a park, or a relaxing dip in the pool. Surrounding yourself with nature will result in a fresh outlook on life.

As they say, laughter is the best medicine, especially so if you’re ailment is a stressful environment.
