Being Different

Self-expression is one of the many gifts we’ve been born with as people. It’s all out there — your aesthetic, your preferences…it’s all there because you express it and choose to put it out there.

But here’s one controversial take. Do you ever feel that some people might go a little overboard with this? You know, as in just saying things they don’t mean and trying to pretend they’re someone they’re not just so they can be different?

Well, if you have, then you might have one question about all of this. Just why would people do that in the first place?

There are a million different reasons why people do, well, literally anything. But since we’re talking about simply just being meaninglessly different and/or edgy (i/e: rebel without a cause), you might imagine the reasons to be something like simply wanting attention (which honestly isn’t that bad).

Lots of people want attention, as you might know, but this is the least malicious way to get it, which is one positive to take away from all this.

Another reason people might be edgy just for the sake of being edgy is that people are simply either using it as a shield or maybe even just a skin to wear to start over from scratch. And, yes, these are fairly innocuous compared to the last reason.

And what is the last reason? Well, they’re afraid of being themselves. Just as simple as that. They don’t really want or maybe they just don’t know who they are so they choose to build their images as people who are simply unlike everyone else.

So, is this a bad thing? Should we even care (mild annoyances aside)?

This is the point where we give you our full opinion, un-prompted and unfiltered. And you probably think our opinion will be something along the lines of ‘live and let live‘ and ‘as long as no one’s hurt…‘ — and you would be right…just not one hundred percent.

See, if you’re not hurting anyone, you should be allowed to do just whatever it is you’re doing. However, if you’re hurting yourself by putting on a fake personality and suppressing your own (as well as somewhat raining on everyone’s parade) just because you want to be edgy and different…then maybe you should think about it differently.

Faux-uniqueness is, sadly, not unique.
