We have a great waste problem in Egypt where most garbage is either being sent to landfills or burned. The concept of recycling is not widely practiced here with very few companies and people who do it. However, people are trying to come around with many startups to try and solve our waste problem.

Last weekend, Ma’amoora beach was filled with boats made out of plastic bottles. This was the result of a contest held on the beach from the 6th to the 16th of July, to encourage both recycling and exercise. This contest was arranged in collaboration between the Ma’amoora Youth Center and the Ma’amoora Society for the Protection of the Coastal Strip.

Mohamed Al Benay, president of the society, said that a group of boat workshops were utilized for the contest. Moreover, the contest was supervised by a frame specialist that came all the way from Bologna, Italy. The specialist supervised the boat building process from the 8th to the 12th of July.

More than thirty young Ma’amoora residents and neighbors nearby participated in the boat building contest. Hopefully, this contest encourages others to recycle plastic containers and bottles.

Having contests like this should be more common around Egypt to promote recycling and a greener way of living. We Egyptians need to learn how to properly dispose of our waste. Our pollution problem seems to get worse each year and we quickly need to educate people how to recycle.
