Known for her controversial music, Lady Gaga has always been one to shock the public with her daring productions. Her latest music video for the song titled “Til It Happens to You,” which has gone viral with over 9 million views in less than one week, definitely sets the bar high with its powerful message.

In the music video, we get to watch how multiple incidents of on-campus rape are orchestrated, as the singer croons “Till It happens to you, you don’t know how it feels… I know how it feels.” The song and music video were released almost one year after Lady Gaga stated that she was previously raped.

The music video was released just in time for the beginning of the university semester and raises awareness about rape in an attempt to empower rape victims to reach out for help. The video, which features the “Twilight” actress Nikki Reed , ends with a reminder: “One in five college women will be sexually assaulted this year unless something changes.”

The song was originally recorded for the documentary “The Hunting Ground” which touches on the same topic; a percentage of its proceeds will go to sexual assault support groups.

On an ending note, it is important to remember that rape is an extremely serious matter that should never be taken lightly or overlooked. Rape victims should never feel ashamed or powerless and seeking help is nothing to feel shy about. If you, or someone you know, has been a victim of this horrendous crime, do contact the Centre for Egyptian Women’s Legal Assistance ( ) or, seek psychological support and help by contacting any nearby psychology clinic.
