Tamer Hosny

You’ve seen the social media frenzy happening about, didn’t you? Well, we’re sure you couldn’t have missed it since it was about the divorce of Tamer Hosny and Basma Boussel!

The entire internet has talked about it endlessly to the point where we think we might keep living on it forever. But wait, did the internet really talk…or did everyone just start making memes about it?

Yeah, we know you already know what the answer is and where this is going. And we need to talk, seriously talk, about this because there’s someone in the wrong here and no it’s not Tamer Hosny or Basma Boussel. It’s us, actually.

So, why are we all culprits in someone else’s divorce?

Well, the reasons vary, truly, but mostly it’s the fact that we didn’t only shove our noses into other people’s business. No, we did more than that and made memes making fun of said people’s business.

And sure, right about now you may want to pull the whole ‘pot calling the kettle black‘ thing on us, but here’s the thing — had the things people been posting about the very public divorce announcement been limited to discussing it or maybe being surprised about it, we wouldn’t have even mentioned it.

We know we don’t need to say this next to garner a sense of sympathy but put yourself in Tamer Hosny and Basma Boussel’s shoes for two seconds:

You married someone you loved dearly, things stalled and divorce was mentioned, and literally everyone around is making fun of you and your possible divorce. Not exactly a fun thing to experience, correct?

Okay‘, you may want to say, ‘but they’re celebrities and people can’t help but talk about celebrities‘. And, okay, we’ll give you that. Celebrity culture is so deeply-sated into our culture that we just can’t help it.

But still, that doesn’t mean mocking the news of divorce is something warranted. Everyone knows celebrities live in a semi-suspended reality, but they’re still people at the end of the day.

And you know what? There’s a third reason we shouldn’t go on our merry way to joke about something this un-jokable about (at least until the person in question decides joking time is now) — the divorce isn’t even confirmed and Basma Boussel has reportedly taken back her words. So, we’re really giving fuel to a half-truth at this point.

Yes. Sometimes, we push it too much.
