So, it’s almost the weekend again! That means you’ll finally have more time on your hands to go to the cinema and catch up on the new releases. Today’s film review is Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (Tim Burton, 2016, USA).

The movie centers on Jake, who travels to Wales in order to reconnect with his grandfather, and the stories he’s heard from him as a young boy. His grandfather tells him about the time he spent in a home for children at the island and all the peculiar children of special abilities that reside within the home.

Determined to find the truth in his grandfather’s bedtime stories, Jake travels to Wales to find himself plunged into a world of magic, action, romance and adventure when he meets the captivating Eva Green playing the role of Miss Peregrine who runs the children’s home. Jake soon discovers that although he’s led an ordinary life till now, he might not be so ordinary himself.

The World of the Filmezgif-com-optimize

I like how the movie drew upon two realms, the realm of the believable and the realm of the unbelievable. The movie created unbelievable people within the real world which helped it seem more believable. While watching, I felt very invested in the story. I didn’t question the fact that there was an invisible boy or that there was a girl who had the ability to float, because they framed it in an interesting manner. The film was not focused solely on their abilities, but had more to do with the life these peculiar children led and how they wanted to continue to lead that life. The ability to humanize monsters is something Tim Burton excels at.

This is another thing I truly appreciated in the film. In the beginning of the film, you see that Jake struggles to connect with others in his own world. Everything is dark, and the colors of everything around him are cold and uninviting. But as soon as he finds himself in Miss Peregrine’s home, the colours around him change to a colourful warmer tone. And this displays how happy he is in that world. Burton draws a contrast between these two worlds to show the viewers where Jake truly belongs.

Eva Green is an extremely talented actress. You’ll have seen her in films such as Dark Shadows and The Kingdom of Heaven. As the exact and ever accurate Miss Peregrine, she shows a different side to a place of authority. Although she is strict on time and punctuality, she cares deeply for the children in her home and loves them immensely. She never pushes Jake to stay with them, not even once, and cares for his well being as if he were her own.

Adventure!

We truly haven’t had a good adventure/fantasy film hit in a while. This movie is a feel-good refreshing breeze that allows you to transport yourself to a whole other world!
