Many Germans had been advocating against taking in Syrian refugees because of the anti-migrant sentiment that has seized European countries by fears of radical Muslims and terrorist attacks.

However, in Leipzig, Germany, all these worries are put aside at the moment. Three anonymous Syrian heroes handed over Jaber Al Bakr who is suspected for plotting a jihadist bomb attack, to the police.

Two of the three Syrians had met Al Bakr as he was looking for a place to stay. And because he’s a fellow Syrian seeking refugee in Germany, they offered him a place to stay. They didn’t realise that he was the fugitive who’s got Germany riled up! Upon recognizing his face from the picture the police had released of him asking the public for help in tracking him down, they tied him up with electrical cords and alerted the authorities immediately.

The police didn’t encounter much resistance because by the time they got there, he was already tied up and lying down. Two of them guarded him as the third went to the police station. The authorities are not identifying the three Syrians out of concern they would become targets for retribution. Those who Germans trusted the least are now being dubbed as “heroes” for saving many of their lives. One of the trio was quoted saying: “I am so grateful to Germany for taking us in. We could not allow him to do something to Germans.”

Here’s what a few people think about the situation:

Burkhard Jung, the mayor of Leipzig have also commented on the situation by thanking the three Syrian heroes. He described what they did as “a very courageous act”. He also proceeded to say that “Many, many refugees are here because they are fleeing the fighters of the so-called Islamic State. That’s worth remembering, and this story serves to emphasize that.”
