“To be open-minded or not to be open-minded? That’s the question!!”

In the past few years, Egyptians, have been trying to break many taboos, old-fashioned norms that have dictated our culture since the beginning of time. We live in a male dominant society which looks down on women; the “Si El-Sayed” phenomenon promotes the superiority of men to women whose only role in life is to get married and raise children.

Being exposed to different cultures, we normally take on and adapt to what we like. The trend nowadays has taken the direction towards being “open-minded” and giving up on some of the meaningless traditions.

Modern Men have been trying to override this “Si El-Sayed” phenomenon, develop a better understanding of the surroundings and adapt to the changing world with a new perspective. Some things, however, are resistant to change. There’s always that conflict between being an open-minded understanding guy and being a typical oriental Egyptian guy who is ruled and controlled by some lame traditions.

Each time they try to break free, they fail due to many restrictions that were stipulated by a group of outdated mindsets.

Women, on the other hand, have been trying to break away from the timeless unbreakable taboo of marriage and raising kids. They now pursue careers, seek top executive positions and won’t just settle for any regular job. They look forward to achieving great goals, but then those same outdated mindsets pressure them to get married and have kids because this is what they are expected to do. They start feeling the pressure which raises the conflict between being an open-minded goal-oriented woman and being an oriental Egyptian woman who must follow the same lame traditions.

Traditions are a great legacy to leave behind and pass on to the next generations; however, those traditions have to push you forward. If they are pulling you down, then they are definitely worth breaking.
