This is a scandal so outrageous you will honestly think it came out of a movie. The mastermind and con artist behind this needs to have a reality TV show created about him.

Yesterday, several Egyptian newspapers reported the start of an investigation into the corrupt scandal involving the supposedly visually impaired goalball team that was sent to Poland last September to take part in the World Cup.

Turns out, the alleged team sent, was not only perfectly healthy, not blind, but was only using this as a means to flee the country to Europe.

Shocking, I know!

They have not returned to Cairo until today and details of their whereabouts still remain unknown.

Things seemed quite fishy when the “blind” team’s sporting club by the name of “Al Iman” did not seek any financial support from the Youth and Sports Ministry or the Federation of the visually impaired to attend the tournament. It seems a bit suspicious that they took it upon themselves to cover the costs of accommodation, insurance, flights and pocket money even though the registration cost on its own is around 2340 dollars. This on its own should not have clicked right with the responsible authorities, but it seems to have slipped right under their noses without any notice.

The official papers show that the players each paid around 50k LE to get their travel visas to Europe, or rather as was later discovered, 50k LE to get an easy flee out of Egypt.

What is even more outrageous is that so many authorities were involved in this incident including the Egyptian Paralympic Committee, the Youth and Sports Ministry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Consular Affairs. Not only does it seem like these authorities were negligible of their duties, but they have actually made sure that this group get an easy way out, whether it be through the visa or airport procedures. Clearly, none of the public figures involved took the time to double check the papers and are now acting evasive and innocent of the whole situation.

The newly formed Egyptian Federation for people with visual disabilities has decided to refer the case to the Attorney General today for investigation and we hope that this absurd scandal is solved in due time.
