When did everything and everyone become so chill? When did chill become the new golden trait every man and woman should possess? I honestly think “chill” is another word for mediocre and I almost have to forcefully stop myself from punching anyone who tells me to “chill.”

Really like someone? Chill.

Your boss is giving you a hard time? Chill.

Your parents are stressing you out? Chill.

You’re passionate about something and want to make it happen? Chill.

You want to express yourself in any way, shape or form? Chill.

We keep chilling and chilling until we’re really stripped away from all emotions that make us feel alive and the moments that make our lives a bit sweeter. But in this day and age, non-chill people tend to suffer more. Here’s why:

  1. Your love life suffers greatly when you are not chill.

When you are not chill, you don’t have the patience to deal with anything casual or light when you’re burning with desire or really attracted to someone. Small talk is your worst enemy. You still can’t really imagine how “Netflix & Chill” is the new way of getting to know another person. You always have the urge to let them know or show them that you really care about them without having to play all these waiting games. You ask shallow questions when all you really want to ask is: Why should we be casual? Why can’t I text you whenever I want? Why can’t I ask if this is going to go anywhere or not? Most important, how many people are you being casual with? One way or another, your true feelings surface and you find yourself pushing this person away because you were a little bit non-chill for their chillness.

  1. Your boss will most likely not like you.

Most of the time, your boss wants you to be indubitably chill, borderline numb. How else would he/she get away with passing on all these daunting chores to you? Served with a side of mood swings and a dash of attitude. When you are non-chill around your boss whether you gave a certain look, or expressed your interest in being treated like a human being rather than a machine, you will be known as the non-chill employee that everybody just loves to hate.

  1. You just don’t know how to relax.

You’re always twitching and fretting about something, whether it’s that appointment you have later, the call you have to make, or that text message you just sent. You think twice and thrice about everything you do and everything you’ve done even if you can’t do anything about it. You hate waiting for anything-food, phone calls, weekends, holidays. You just want things to happen-quickly. Anxiety and life go hand in hand for a non-chill person.

  1. People may think you are ‘crazy” but it’s really because you care a little bit more than you should.

When you are not as chill as you should be, people are going to label you all sorts of things like crazy, unrealistic, snappy…etc. But the truth is, you are not chill because you care, you are not chill because you are passionate, you are not chill because you are real, you are not chill because you feel everything so deeply, you are not chill because you think “chill” is another word for settling, and life is too short to be chill about the things that matter.
