In light of the new Jamila Awad series Lazm Aiesh where she plays a character with vitiligo, a new trend emerged strongly and we had to state why it’s wrong.

If you’re wondering what the trend is, here’s an example. This is a girl (out of many others) who decided to paint her face with makeup to mimic the condition of vitiligo.

Honestly, we can understand how she thinks she’s supporting the cause. But yet again, good intentions are no an excuse for lack of education.

Vitiligo is a disease that affects the immune system, just because it has recently come to the media’s attention doesn’t make it a TREND.

Mimicking the skin condition with makeup or face apps is purely inappropriate. Why? If you’re still wondering, simply because it’s a hidden denigration in itself.

How? Let’s take a moment and think about it.

This act is pretty similar to the black face dilemma. You’re telling people with color and people with vitiligo that there’s something wrong with their skin.

And by painting our face black or painting vitiligo spots, we’re following the new trend of accepting you among us.

Not only but also, trying too much to prove that you’re not shaming or being racist to this point, only proves the opposite.

Case in point, here’s a comment from a girl who has vitiligo that found Hana’s post offensive and inappropriate.

The girl has a point here. There are plenty of ways with which you can support a certain cause without coming off as offensive or jumping on a trend.

But despite that, Hana refused to delete her post and she heavily stands by her “My intentions are good and this is my way of showing support” argument.

We know that such itchy topics of acceptance and inclusion are still relatively new to our Arab region and that mistakes happen.

What we shouldn’t tolerate anymore though is the way people go on with their lives not listening to the few others trying to educate them on such topics.
