It seems that there has been a wave of absolute desperation and sadness clouding the country lately, which is understandable due to the horrible economic conditions that we’ve all been suffering from over the last few years. However, I bet you all want to do something about it, yet you feel helpless, so I come to you bearing the answer to all of your problems. Bear in mind though, the answer is very short and simple: VOLUNTEER! Volunteer because it will change your life in more ways than you might think.

Justin Trudeau

It will make you feel like you have a purpose

Gone are the days when you find yourself stuck in your place, wondering what you are doing or why you are even alive. When you volunteer, you will start feeling like you really have a purpose, and that you are serving the community somehow. Your existence will become an asset, not a liability. You will no longer be a walking zombie sucking out all of the natural resources of our earth, but instead a contributing factor towards its betterment.

You’ll develop an understanding of life

Listening to news or reading a newspaper might inform you about what’s going on in the world, but it will surely never make you feel it, and this is exactly where volunteering comes in and saves the day. Since volunteering entails interaction with people whom you are supposedly helping, it puts you in a position where you feel for yourself the suffering that many people are living through nowadays. The problems stop being a headline in a newspaper or a media coverage and start being an ugly reality which is really happening at this time, at this point while you are reading this text, making you more aware of the real world.

Volunteering works as a resume bonus

Even though I’m a firm believer that volunteering should totally be for non materialistic reasons. If knowing that it is a huge asset on your resume will make you volunteer, I’m fine with it. A volunteering experience on your resume will increase your chances of employment and give you the qualifications necessary for your next job, and if you do not believe me, I come bearing proof. A 2013 report published by the Corporation for National and Community Service, confirmed that unemployed volunteers stood a 27% higher chance than people who have no previous volunteer work experience.

You really get to change the world

Most of the people would tell you otherwise, and it’s relatively true, but what is also true is that you should never underestimate the importance of the helping hand you are offering. It literally changes lives, and that one kid in the midst of the 100 students you are teaching English to, could grow up and cure cancer. He could grow up to have a healthy educated family, at the very least, and while some people would tell you that it’s not enough, I’d say screw them. One life changed is all the betterment we need in this cruel world.

Whoever you are, I want you to know that it doesn’t matter how busy you are. There’s always something to be done. Even though you don’t get paid for volunteering, you surely get rewarded. I can assure you that you will never find that kind of self satisfaction in anything else in the world. Always remember, you are capable of changing the world. You are the key to someone’s success, so do it. Be the change. It will change your life, and it’ll save someone else’s life too.
