It’s the weekend, and we all have a little more time on our hands! If you’re looking for a good show to binge watch, we strongly recommend Girls.
It’s not what GIRLS is about, but rather how it is about it
Very simply, the show is about a group of 20-something girls who try to figure life out in the big city. The plot is redundant and has been made and remade a million times. What makes the show stand out, however, is how it chooses to take on a plot that’s been chewed and spit out relentlessly.
How it is about it?
The show deals with the ugly side of life. It doesn’t try to be pretty or grand and it doesn’t sugarcoat anything. It portrays all the moments you have faced and will continue to face throughout your 20’s that are too uncomfortable to talk about out loud. The show deals with the facts of life you can’t quite put a finger on because they’re too confusing and makes you feel uneasy. It’s about friends erupting at each other drunk and unleashing all their resentments towards each other out in the open. It’s about all the feelings and thoughts you hold on to because you’re embarrassed to admit them out loud. Most of the time while you’re watching, you’ll want to hide your face and will feel a surge of tension building up inside of you because sh*t just got too real.
Lena Dunham has successfully created a show that is weird, gross and annoying at times, but still relevant and meaningful. Dunham’s character, Hannah Horvath, is the most narcissistic person you will never meet. Most of the characters are not really likeable (but we’ll get to that later), yet somehow we can’t turn away. Why? Because we’re all self-proclaimed narcissists and anyone who claims otherwise will be the most narcissistic of all. There’s no doubt that some of us are more self-centered than others, but every person in their 20’s is selfish and self-obsessed. The show lets you know that it’s okay. It lets you know that it’s all a part of your self-discovering journey.
The characters are all unlikeable
None of the main characters are likeable in anyway. You might not relate to any of their personalities, but you will resonate with the situations they’re put in. Shoshanna says “like” a lot. It takes effort to keep up with her fast-talk and most of what she says is random at best. Marnie is a b*tch who will grow on you by time. As for Jessa, I don’t know why, but I just hate how much I love her. She’s mean, straightforward and doesn’t give a crap about what anyone thinks of her. She’s also got a killer fashion sense! Basically, these characters are the worst parts of all of us. They are the living embodiment of our ugliest and most pretentious thoughts.
It’s relatable to every girl in her 20’s
The show has many quotes that are just too on point. Here are some examples:
“Sometimes being stuck in my own head is so exhausting that it makes me want to cry.” – Marnie
“I don’t like women telling other women what to do or how to do it or when to do it.” – Jessa
“I just wish someone would tell me, like, “This is how the rest of your life should look.” – Marnie
“You know what the weirdest part about having a job is? You have to be there every day, even on the days you don’t feel like it.” – Jessa
“No one could ever hate me as much as I hate myself, okay? So any mean thing someone’s gonna think of to say about me, I’ve already said to me, about me, probably in the last half hour!” – Hannah
If you’re 20-something who’s feeling lost and insecure most of the time, then you’ll feel better watching these 4 young women screw their lives up time after time!
