We saw the news that Turkey is allegedly going to take religion off its ID cards, a move that should bring it closer to its goal of joining the EU. Way to go Turkey! We wish Egypt would follow suit soon, we’re really tired of how outdated our IDs are.

Why does religion go on ID cards? It really doesn’t make any sense. Let’s be real, it’s one of the first things people learn about each other in Egypt any way so why does it have to take up space on IDs?

Religion is something personal, but in Egypt the government apparently decides what religion you will be for the rest of your life, simply depending on what family you were born into. That doesn’t allow much room for personal decision… Or wanting to be a bit more private about it for that matter.

While we’re ranting about it, there’s a couple other things we would like to see removed from our ID cards, because they just really don’t make sense.

Marital Status

Come on gif

As if everyone isn’t already self-conscious enough about their marital status, it has to go right there on that piece of plastic we have to carry around everywhere. Come on! Even Facebook let’s us decide if we want to hide our relationship status or not, and we can change that as many times as we want!

Husband’s Name of Married Women

Leonardo screams internally

This one really rubs us the wrong way. Why the heck does a woman’s husband name need to go on her ID, as if she is his property or something? Does this make it easier to figure out who she “belongs” to? No. Just, no. It’s pointless, and a complete double standard because we don’t see the wife’s name on her husband’s ID.

Profession

Are you kidding me gif

Putting someone’s profession on their business card is so archaic we just can’t even. We don’t live in a day and age where someone is guaranteed to stay in the same field their whole career. Hellllloooooooo! The millenials are here! We shouldn’t have to hassle with changing our IDs from student to whatever we studied to whatever we are working in but didn’t study. That’s what business cards are for!
