Mohamed Komsan

You know Mohamed Komsan. There isn’t a way around it because you just do now. Even before he’d been exposed and had confessed that he’d been faking cancer, you might have known him as the person whose photos resurfaced every once in a while as thousands prayed for him.

We won’t lie. The minute this news broke out, we didn’t know what to think because, well, this isn’t exactly a run-of-the-mill normal situation here. But now, there’s just a lot to say.

This all started four years ago, when Mohamed Komsan first began faking cancer.

He’d regularly posted photos of himself getting treated at hospitals and being bed-ridden. He’d also regularly shaved his head and posted sentiments of “fighting the disease with hope”.

The ruse had been so intricate for a while and no one suspected a thing, as Komsan’s followers increased and he’d began receiving gifts and money from people who supported him. So, you may ask, when did people start poking holes in his story?

Well, that started recently. See, what had happened was that Mohamed Komsan started talking about how the treatment wasn’t working and that he was giving up hope, prompting many people to seek him out to help him.

According to reports, people had asked Komsan where he was getting treated but upon him telling them the name, they could not find that establishment. They then asked for medical reports but Komsan had no answer for them.

Curious and worried about the different possibilities of what might have happened, the people involved filed a report and the police went for Mohamed Komsan. And during investigations, Komsan confessed he’d been faking cancer.

Now that you’ve read this, you might want to ask — how is there anything worse than that? What would be worse than pretending to be sick just because you’re an attention seeker?

Well, here’s the thing. Mohamed Komsan might not be a regular attention seeker. Munchausen Syndrome (and Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy) is a mental disorder that causes people to fake all kinds of illnesses.

And not just that. People who suffer from Munchausen Syndrome will go to extreme lengths, such as faking medical tests, exaggerating symptoms, and even harming themselves to give themselves these diseases.

Dee-Dee Blanchard and her daughter Gypsy-Rose, who she forced to be sick all her life

Munchausen Syndrome has recently gained more presence in conversation after Gypsy-Rose Blanchard killed her own mother Dee-Dee, who had Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy and made her daughter believe she was terminally ill and had to get surgeries throughout her life.

Obviously, that’s an extreme case and there’s no doubt most of you don’t think it’s that extreme with Mohamed Komsan. But since he’d reportedly told people he’d had a heart attack after he was exposed for faking cancer, we can only be sure that Komsan needs professional help.

Even if he doesn’t have Munchausen Syndrome, Komsan will still need the help because according to him, this was all for social media clout.

Yes, simply for social media fame and clout, which are now so normalized we’ve seen people do anything from live-recording their reactions to a parent’s death to faking cancer to get it. And if you can’t see where this is going, we might have to say it — this degree of social media obsession is yet another disease.

Aside from the financial compensation he’ll probably have to make, Mohamed Komsan should also be required to see a therapist because this could all just be a gateway for the worse.

There is a disease here, but it’s not cancer.
