outage

On October 4th, 2020, at approximately 6 pm, the whole world went silent! You had to be living under a rock if you didn’t notice something unusual taking place 2 days ago. Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were down for more than six hours!

Let’s pause for a second and assess the situation. Can you actually comprehend the fact that the whole world was going through the same thing at exactly the same time? All around the globe, everyone’s Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp stopped functioning at once.

People felt like they were silent all of a sudden. Like they couldn’t voice out their concerns or connect with others. It felt like a pause button was suddenly pressed on everything. Some stayed silent and some started to resort to other methods of communication like calls, other texting outlets, and Twitter.

Because of the fact that Twitter was the only social media platform working at the time, literally almost everyone was on Twitter the whole day! It was all so hilarious to the extent that even Twitter itself made fun of what was going on.

During those long six hours, there had been different opinions about what was happening. Some wished for them to stay down for a couple more days and even weeks. While others couldn’t bear the thought of living in a world without social media for a couple of hours.

This is why we’ve asked our readers how they felt about the whole outage fiasco! Here are some of the answers!

“I felt like it was a well needed break from social media, wish it lasted longer”

Some saw this as an opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and connect better in real life or take some time to not connect at all.

“I wanted Instagram and whatsApp to stay down so that I didn’t need to do the work I was slacking on”

Some people were strong advocates for the platforms to stay down but for their own reasons. Those reasons mainly revolved around work. As predictable as it is, no one wanted to get their work done! And since a lot of work gets done through social media nowadays, no one wanted social media to be back. We can’t deny, a whole week off would sound superb!

“I felt so bored, I actually went scrolling on Twitter. I wanted Facebook back!”

We know Twitter people were probably unbothered by the whole thing. But the Facebook and Instagram clan were just pissed! So many people felt super attached to their daily dose of scrolling through the stories and posts that they couldn’t put up with the couple of hours when they all went black.

The question remains, are we too dependent on social media in our everyday lives, or are we well on our way to getting there?
