1-His Hospitability
At holidays, the De La Rentas filled their house in Punta Cana with relatives and friends, Mr. De La Renta often sang and danced spontaneously after dinner.
2-His Soft Side (He was a Romantic)
“To me, home is wherever Annette is,” then added with a droll laugh, “She could be unbelievably happy without me.” (Annette De La Renta is his wife. Yeah, we all wish for someone like that)
3-His Daring Personality
When he first started an internship at Lanvin he couldn’t cut, drape or sew. He mentioned it in an interview in The Times; “He loved me because I spoke Spanish, and he asked me if I could cut, drape and sew, and of course I said yes”, and he added, “He offered me a little more money than Dior, and I said I would start in two weeks. Then I went to a fashion school and asked the woman who ran it if she could teach me the year’s course in two weeks.”
4-His Artistic Vision
“Never, ever confuse what happens on a runway with fashion,” Mr. De La Renta said “A runway is spectacle. It’s only fashion when a woman puts it on.”
5-His Influence
He dressed many American first ladies, for eg. Nancy Reagan, Hilary Clinton and finally this month Michelle Obama wore his label too. Plenty of Hollywood celebrities made a presence with his designs on Red carpets; Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz, Oprah Winfrey, Emma Watson and Penelope Cruz were few of them. Let alone, Amal Alammudin (George Clooney’s wife) classic romantic wedding dress.
6-His Wit
He offered in a speech, once, to send three-way mirrors to certain editors who wore miniskirts. (well, you know why!!)
7-His Love For Colors
“I like light, color, luminosity. I like things full of color and vibrant,” he said
8-His Modesty
In an interview back in 2009 he said, “It’s never been heavy. Somebody might ask, ‘What is Oscar de la Renta?’ And you could say, ‘It’s a pretty dress.'”
