A couple of days ago, TV presenter Amr Adib hosted the cast of the ‘El Atawla’ series, which premiered during Ramadan. During their conversation, Amr Adib discussed with Ahmed El Sakka how his portrayal of Nassar received negative reviews from veteran critic Tarek El Shenawy.

There’s usually a typical way actors respond to such criticism during an on-air interview. Most either choose not to respond or defend themselves and their performance against the criticism. However, El Sakka took a surprising approach, mentioning that he appreciated this opinion and would do his best to work on himself and improve. That inspired us to consider four important things when receiving criticism in our profession.

Criticism Never Diminishes Your Merit
Some may believe that being open to criticism detracts from their recognition for any successes they achieve. But in truth, criticism never diminishes your merit. It’s something built up over years of hard work and never erased by any opinion.

Embrace It as an Opportunity for Self-Development
No one is too big for self-development, not even well-established artists or professionals in any field. Embrace feedback as a genuine opportunity for self-assessment and growth for what lies ahead.

Perspectives Always Differ Among Individuals
People will never agree on something or someone. It’s a truth we should all believe and apply in our daily lives to avoid any feelings of disappointment. Perspectives will always vary among those who admire or dislike something, and it’s never an indication of failure.

Beware of Overconfidence Traps
One last thing to consider is the fine line between being confident while dealing with criticism and falling into the trap of overconfidence. It’s essential to handle negative feedback with confidence for self-protection, but never to overestimate yourself and feel immune to any objection.
